Marketing Trends for Voice Actors in 2024

As we head into the new year, and look to accomplish an entirely new list of goals, it's important to pay attention to where the industry is going, and what actions are the ones moving the needle. That includes in your self marketing efforts. Some strategies work better than others. Some tactics are more effective than others.
In this episode, I share five different marketing trends I'll be keeping an eye on in 2024, as I believe they'll all have an impact on the growth and success of my voice over business.

How Voice Actors Should Respond to A.I.

When it comes to A.I. and the voice over industry, there's a lot of fear. A lot of speculation. A lot of uncertainty. A lot of doubt. But there seems to be less hard data. Less actual information. Less real stories to back up all the fear, uncertainty and doubt.
A.I. is here, whether we like it or not. It's going to be better as well. But that doesn't mean it's time to pack your studio and sell it on eBay. I genuinely believe there's still ample opportunity for professional voice actors. I'm seeing evidence of that in my own business, where I continue to sign new clients regularly for many different types of voice over.
In this episode, I share the advice I've been giving to voice actors who are coming to me on a near daily basis, sometimes paralyzed in fear of what's happening and what's to come (which, to be clear, nobody ACTUALLY knows what's to come). I hope this advice will encourage you.

Audiobooks and Acting with Sean Pratt

When I reached out to Sean Pratt, my goal was discuss audiobooks. A genre of voice over that I know nothing about and an entirely intimidated by. I expected to learn a few things, and uncover some helpful nuggets for podcast listeners who are in the space.
What I got instead, was a virtual acting master class that can be applied across basically any genre of voice over, including audiobooks. Yes, we discuss books and strategy and marketing and A.I. and all those things. But Sean went so much deeper and gave us so much more.

Please Hold... Talking Telephony Voice Over with Liz de Nesnera

Telephony is an often overlooked genre of voice over. Ok, so maybe it's not as fun or glamorous as video games or promo or animation. But it can actually be very lucrative. A nice foundational genre for your business to have consistent income landing in your bank account while you're pursuing some of those other genres.
Mention the the words telephony, IVR or on-hold messaging in the voice over world, and one name will come up nearly every time. That name is Liz de Nesnera. She is a master of this genre of voice over, even consulting with the GVAA on the telephony rates for the GVAA Rate Guide. In this interview, she delivers on Master Class on telephony, and makes a strong case for why it's a genre more of us should be considering.

Straight Talk about A.I. in Voice Over with Bev Standing

If you follow the current public narratives surrounding A.I. in voice over, it would be easy to draw the conclusion that we're all screwed and the industry is moments away from it's final breath. Every post about A.I. is negative and often rooted in fear.
But is this an accurate representation of what's actually going on in the industry? Or is the reality is a little more nuanced, and perhaps a little less doom and gloom?
Bev Standing has become one of the most trusted and respected voices in our industry when it comes to the subject of A.I. She got there because of a personal battle over an A.I. voice model of her voice that was used in ways she never approved, and she fought back.
